The Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER) system allows online access to court records at http://www.pacer.gov
It was a revolutionary innovation when launched in 1988. Today it desperately needs to be updated for the modern internet, and contains limits that are unconscionable to the ideal of transparent accessible government.
On April 1st PACER fees were raised by 25%.
PACER needs to be updated to minimally include:
- Free and effective search options
- Free access to all public records by the public
- Allow RECAP firefox extension use for free users to increase access and reduce operating costs
- An API to allow applications to request records
- No limits on obtaining many records, to allow more kinds of legal research
