Trees improve air and water quality, reduce amounts of CO2 in the air, conserve energy by creating shade, reduce violence by fostering a more amicable environment, and increase the “walkability” of an area, which means increasing traffic to local businesses. We petition the Obama Administration to issue federal regulations to state departments of environmental conservation setting a minimum number of trees for localities with populations over 100,000. The number of trees mandated will vary based on the size and population of the area and will be determined by each states needs. Due to the fiscal benefits of urban forestry, each city will be required to fund this project without federal assistance, unless it is proven that they do not have the financial resources to carry out the project.
