It is our belief that the WBC does not meet the criteria set forth in the US Tax Code Section 501(c)(3), and is committing a fraud upon this nation and it’s taxpayers by hiding the income and activities of Fred Phelps under the guise of a church. The WBC goes against the generally accepted legal sense of religion to publicly spread prejudice and discrimination, with money under the name of the church being used for the private benefit of himself and his extended family in violation of the tax code. As a recognized hate group they should not be allowed claim religious exemption.
While the Supreme Court has ruled in the past that despite the hateful nature of their views their rights to free speech are constitutionally protected, there is nothing that states that they are tax exempt.
