There is a clause in the Trans-Pacific Partnership that allows for companies to sue member nations (including the U.S.) for changing their laws in such a way that would negatively affect a company's future profits.
The broad language of the treaty would restrict the rights of nations to make meaningful reform to their labor, health, and environmental laws. An example of this would be when the tobacco giant Phillip Morris used an outdated trade agreement with Hong Kong to sue Australia for putting into place smoking regulations.
This stunning amount of deregulation would effectively turn sovereign nations into oligarchies.
Please remove this part of the treaty and keep multinational business interests subordinate to the general good of humanity.
Sincerely,
-Concerned American Citizens
