Current General Services Administration rules discourage employees from commuting to work by bicycle by prohibiting the parking of bicycles inside of federal buildings. This discourages people from adopting a healthy and environmentally friendly commuting solution.
Most bicycles suitable for commutes over a few miles cost between $500 and $5000 and are not designed for long term, outdoor storage. Weather greatly accelerates wear to critical bicycle parts when stored outdoors, significantly increasing the costs of commuting this way. As costs increase, people will be more inclined to drive to work.
Ideally GSA would provided dedicated, indoor bicycle storage solutions. At a minimum, the GSA should rescind its existing prohibition.
