"...Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of a religion..."
By allowing churches to be tax exempt, we are supporting a national establishment of a religious body. Just as our right to practice a religion must be respected by government, it may not support churches by tax subsidies or any other means. Non-church groups receiving tax exemptions must annually file a detailed 990 statement itemizing where the money has gone. The IRS automatically waives the 990 requirement for churches.
Rescind all tax exempt statuses for churches and places of worship. This will put billions of dollars into the economy and certainly do much to balance our budget.
Also, the churches routinely are not accountable to the citizens who subsidize them.
Keep church and state separate.
