According to CNN, "the confirmed death toll has reached 18, with over 250 injured and 1,000 detained by government forces—and some reports of gruesome torture are beginning to emerge as well."
"The Venezuelan government has openly embraced the classic tactics of an authoritarian regime, jailing its opponents, muzzling the media, and intimidating civil society,” said José Miguel Vivanco, "Americas director at Human Rights Watch."The charges brought against Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López smack of a politically motivated attempt to silence dissent in the country," said Amnesty International.
