As worded, the thirteenth amendment allows the enslavement of anyone convicted of a crime. This was put in to appease the South after the war, by allowing them to re-enslave blacks simply by trumping up charges and convicting them. It has corrupted the justice system and caused undo harm to many families. It has created a system of slave labor in the U.S. that is against our morals and undermines commerce. It has brought about private for-profit prison corporations that lobby for more prison terms, longer terms and may cause false convictions, all in the name of profit. It has caused the U. S. to have the largest prison population in the world. 1 in three people have a criminal record, according to recent FBI findings. The majority of prisons inmates are minorities. Coincidence?
