The American school system needs a full rewrite, with an eye to the needs of the modern world - finances, computer programming and repair, the importance of art, and more. The current system cannot even begin to meet these needs.
Further, the style of education needs to be improved. Rather than teaching the test and being pass-fail, it needs more flexibility and freedom. Kids don't hate school because they're lazy, stupid, or hate to learn - they hate school because it's a toxic, stressful environment.
Schools need to encourage people to learn, rather than associating education with the emotional, mental, and sometimes physical torture that the current institution creates.
