The right of suffrage is not simply a right, but it is a privilege. Since many Americans have this misconception of the voting system, they do not respect it, and it is used inappropriately. The voting system could be improved if voters had to prove American citizenship by presenting photo IDs.
To obtain an ID, Americans could present a birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, or a certificate of citizenship. These documents would prohibit illegal immigrants from voting. The voters SSN would also be presented. After showing these documents, a voter photo ID would be issued. This card will have a number attached, similar to a driver’s license. At the polls, the card will be presented in order to vote.
