When Jerry Sandusky was identified as a child rapist, the country was unified in its horror at his actions, and of a large institution's apparent knowledge of his crimes. Penn State was punished as an enabler. Those who suspected or knew of the the abuse and turned a blind eye were punished and shamed.
A subset of the Vatican and the institution of the Catholic Church has perpetrated, hidden, and enabled the rape and sexual assault of children on a global scale. Rather than handing over child rapists and their collaborators for criminal prosecution, too often it declines resignations, reassigns criminals, and the abuse is repeated.
Any other institution would be held accountable for the rape of its most vulnerable members. Hold the new Pope accountable and finally solve this.
