The army removed Egypt's first freely elected president, in a coup, after a single year. At least 1,400 people have been killed in the crackdown on Morsi's supporters and thousands more arrested on baseless charges.
The ensuing crackdown has also targeted prominent secular activists of the 2011 uprising against veteran president Hosni Mubarak, as well as journalists. Journalists around the world have held protests demanding the reporters' release, with the UN and the US also voicing their support.
Courts have sentenced 529 people to death, without due process, for the killing of an officer. Conversely, just one officer is facing a prison sentence of 10 years for the deaths of 37 detainees or hundreds of protestors.
