Traffic kills 33K people per year. Approximately 6,800 American lives were lost in Afghanistan & Iraq. We are grateful for President Obama’s administration action to end those conflicts, but during the same period 493,149 people were killed in traffic. Transportation policy focuses on congestion and added road capacity. Research argues road capacity cannot relieve congestion. Resources wasted on road capacity could address traffic safety. Vision Zero is the elimination of traffic fatalities and injuries. Five cities adopted Vision Zero policies, but the majority of Americans live in regions where governments have not committed to Vision Zero. Leadership from President Obama can make safety the top priority for federal transportation projects by tying funding to Vision Zero.
