Even as the declining honey bee population threatens the livelihoods of farmers, it is still legal to poison entire hives for convenience. We do not know for sure why honey bees are dying off so quickly, but by the time they qualify for protection under the Endangered Species Act, it will be too late. The honeybee act of 1922 attempts to protect bees from imported diseases, but offers no defense against exterminators. Farmers rely on honey bees to pollinate their crops. Without honey bees, small farmers may be unable to produce, leading to a consolidated supply and higher food prices. We request that the federal government amend the honeybee act to mandate that nuisance hives (i.e. those in residential areas) of the genus Apis (honey bees) be relocated, rather than killed.
