There are more than 1 million Americans with roots in Belgium. Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and a host of other leading American figures had roots in Belgium. The Belgian Hall in Chicago has for decades been a center for the 13 Belgian Clubs in Chicago. Importantly, it was also the direct outgrowth of the Belgian Janitors Union Club. This Club was virtually synonymous with the Chicago Flat Janitors Union local #1. This later became the founding block for the SEIU, today a prominent union representing millions of working Americans.
Today the owners wish to destroy the historic Belgian Hall - the cornerstone which says, "All Belgians Are Equal, 1921" - and build condos.
We are asking for a cease and desist so that this can once again become a community center.
