Save our hearing! Please regulate the maximum volume level that concert venues and bars/nightclubs can play music.

Created by M.H. on February 17, 2013

We kindly petition the Obama administration to enact federal regulations on the maximum volume levels to which patrons of concert venues and nightclubs are subjected.

It is uncontroversial that sustained exposure to excessively loud music can damage one's hearing or induce tinnitus (ringing in the ears). The federal regulations of OSHA set a precedent to protect workers from excessive volume levels. Why shouldn't all citizens have similar health and safety protections? It should be the burden of the venues to expose us to safe volume levels, not our burden to wear safety equipment.

Clearly, market forces have not answered this growing problem, and we thus encourage legislation to protect the hearing of our youth!
