The 235 year old postal service is going to fail if nothing is done to reverse a law made in 2006. The law denotes that the post office, in a 10 year time span, has to fund 75 years of current and future retirement benefits. This 5 billion dollars a year for this prefunding is going into the governments general fund (and being used by no-postal service retirees). The other problem with the prefunding is that 100% of postal revenue comes from stamps and contracts with UPS and FedEx to deliver to 25% of the rural areas they don't service. The Post office gets zero tax dollar, but this prefunding revenue gets directed to the federal government's own retirement fund.
Why this matters:
If the postal service even stays open, rural communities and less profitable urban areas will lose offices.
