September 2014 a Wall Street Journal article posted "This year alone the US Mint spent $114M to produce pennies--$83.7M for nickels, $72.3M for dimes & $133M for quarters." On page 29 of the US Government Accountability Offices 2011 report on US Coins states "Testimony from the Mint and international experts put the average life of coins at about 30 years." C.G.P.Greys 2011 viral video "death to pennies" one line in particular states, "But when the half-cent met its fate, it had more buying power than todays dime so perhaps the list of modern coins to kill could even be larger." We don't have to kill anything though, just halt production for a while. Everything in circulation will remain and we shall see if demand for more coins rise or electronic currency prevail.
