The reason the flow has begun moving towards Pahoa instead of continuing to the ocean as it has for the last 30 years is the south edge of Pu'u O'o crater has been built up higher than the north edge. Hence, the lava naturally pours out on the north, towards peoples homes. If the State cared at all about the 10,000 people, they would bomb the south side of the crater, knocking down the edge, allowing the lava to continue to flow into the ocean. The reason they do not do anything is because no one cares about Pahoa, it has the largest poverty level in the State (last I heard). Who cares about 8,000 poor people, they are even cancelling HUD south of the flow!
