The “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” says abortion after 20 weeks are illegal and a physician must do everything they can to preserve the baby’s life if it is born alive even though studies showed only 20-35% of babies survive before 23 weeks (S.1553, 2016) (Tyson, et. Al., 2008).
Women can only do a test between 14-22 weeks of pregnancy to screen for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and 1-2 weeks to return results (Americanpregnancy.org). Abnormal levels means a baby could have neurological, spinal or other chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (Americanpregnancy.org). If women can’t get tested until 22 weeks, a 20 week cut off for abortion is unreasonable. Tell Congress they cannot take away a mother’s right to an informed decision and to leave the cut-off date at 24 weeks.
