The AUMF 2001 bill was a hasty act passed in the days just after 9/11. It’s broad language and lack of defining restrictions lead it to become a powerful tool for the executive branch. It allowed President Bush to create the NSA wiretapping Stellar Wind program, as well as drone strikes in the middle east, and allows for the illegal capture and detainment of foreign prisoners of war in prisons such as Guantanamo Bay. It damages our relations with foreign countries, as well as violating the Geneva Convention as for handling of prisoners of war. President Obama has also used the bill to consider ISIS/ISIL a viable target for the terrorists detailed in the bill, even though those organizations did not exist at the time(Considering it Al Qaeda’s successor). Advocating for more transparency.
