Currently if you make less than $131,000 per year, you (and your employer), pay social security taxes on all of your income. If you make more than this, you only pay on the first $131,000. Voices from the right keep trying to raise the retirement age and cut social security benefits. However, by eliminating the cap we could make sure that benefits do not have to be cut and the retirement age does not have to be lowered with the added benefit of ensuring that social security stays solvent. Sure, you might be able to work until 80 if you are a politician, but what if you are a bricklayer or a roofer? Why should people making under six figures have to pay on 100% of their income while CEOs making millions only pay on 2 or 3 percent of their income? Eliminate the cap.
