Scrap Columbus Day as a federal holiday, replace it with new Thanksgiving.

Created by M.M. on October 13, 2014

We should scrap Columbus Day and move Thanksgiving to October.

The federal government cannot continue to sanction the celebration of a man who, by his own account, set about to conquer and enslave the Native Americans once he "discovered" them.

Moving Thanksgiving, a holiday that has long celebrated colonial and Native American cooperation, to Columbus's birthday will make the day more inclusive, gives the United States a true autumnal/harvest holiday, and unites a swath of the North American continent in a day of thanks.

Commercially, if that's your thing, moving Thanksgiving to October will extend fourth quarter retail bonanza associated with religious and secular solstice celebration.
