This year we will have a record number of people are currently incarcerated in Federal prisons. According the Federal Bureau of Corrections over 217,000 people, almost one quarter of that population are nonviolent drug offenders. These people are serving more time then those convicted of Murder and Manslaughter.
Familiestogetheragain.org has proposed a strict and responsible common sense second chance program for these individuals. It would be paid for by the participants and save The U.S. at least one Billion dollars annually.
Federal offenders would still be required to serve half of their minimum Federal sentences which in many cases is up to 20 years. Participants would need to have a sponsor to help with employment, housing and report non-compliance with the program.
