Omid Kokabee is a PhD student from the University of Texas who went home to Iran to visit family over the winter holiday and was arrested in February 2011. He has been charged with “communicating with a hostile government” and “illegitimate/illegal earnings" and sentenced to ten years in prison. He denies all charges. He is not a political activist and is not involved in nuclear-related research. He merely wants to continue his studies. He spent fifteen months in prison without a trial and was convicted in May 2012 and his conviction was reaffirmed upon appeal in August 2012. Neither of these trials are thought to have been fair, as Omid was not allowed to see the proof against him or talk with a lawyer. Most recently, he has been denied medical treatment.
