Attacking the symptoms seems so much easier, especially when there is a political agenda behind it, than attacking the root causes. The "meaningful action" should not be on guns. These guns were legally purchased and owned.
The action should be against the way we let damaged children become ignored, isolated, unsupported discards at age 18. This disturbed young man fell through the cracks of every social safety net when he came of "legal age", and the first life he took was that of his mother. A woman who was neither trained nor capable of dealing with such a troubled youth. This scenario of societal neglect is the one repeating a million times every year in this country.
This is where meaningful changes should be considered.
