According to data collected by Amnesty International, at least 500 people in the United States have died since 2001 after being shocked with Tasers either during their arrest or while in jail. 90 percent of those killed were unarmed and posed no serious threat to the police officers.
It's clear from numerous news reports and witness videos that police view the Taser as a tool to gain submission rather than a non-lethal alternative to firearms use. This is completely unacceptable and we seek Federal guidelines limiting their use only to situations in which firearm use would be justified.
