Many residents (including the Governor) have expressed their dissatisfaction with being part of the United States and an unwillingness recognize the legal authority of the federal government. Since Texas receives more in federal funds than in contributes, selling this losing asset makes good economic sense. They could have as bad a public education system and health care system as they want and build electrified fences to keep out illegal immigrants from New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. They could have their own military, give assault weapons to children, teach creationism in public schools and have an intrastate semi-pro professional football league. This makes good economic sense and would raise the average educational and health care standards of the remaining 49 states.
