In 2011 the effects of a massive earthquake followed by tsunami destroyed part of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan. "On July 22, 2013, more than two years after the incident, it was revealed that the plant is leaking radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. On August 20, in a further incident, it was announced that 300 tons of heavily contaminated water had leaked from a storage tank. The leak was assessed as Level 3 on the International Nuclear Event Scale. ...Fukushima coast has one of the world's strongest currents...causing a high dispersion of the radioactive elements.Trace amounts of radiation, [have been] observed around the world (New York State, Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, California, Montreal, and Austria).
