Send Civilian Judges to Guantánamo, Then Shut It

Created by G.S. on May 04, 2013

On May 3, 2013, an Op-Ed written by Bruce Ackerman and Eugene R Fidell with the same title as this petition appeared in the New York Times. Citing precedents by US presidents from Truman to Carter, they suggest that President Obama can securely and legally circumvent the congressional prohibition against bringing Guantánamo detainees onto US soil by sending a federal judge to try them in Guantánamo. This is a straightforward plan with a strong historical foundation. Both for reasons of simple justice and as a way finally to remove the festering boil of the Guantánano detainee camp from America's face, this suggestion should be implemented as soon as possible.
