Chicago and the area around it are completely at odds politically with the rest of the state of Illinois. They dominate the political process, gerrymandering districts to keep their politicians in control of the state legislature. By separating Chicago, the rest of the state would have a chance to enact policies that would allow more representative government of the downstate area.
