I have a simple proposal that may work across the aisle for the majority of the country regarding the current gay marriage issues. Obviously a bit of detail would need to be addressed here, but the solution seems rather obvious.
1. All "marriages" (gay, straight, etc.) should be changed to "civil unions" in the eyes of the government. -The same rights for marriages should be afforded to any two individuals who want to get a "civil union".
2. "Marriage" can still exist if you want your church to recognize your "civil union" as such (and you are welcome to still have a church ceremony).
Pretty simple really... As a whole, we want separation of church and state. -This solution takes "marriage" out of the government's hands and still allows each religion to define "marriage" as it sees fit.
