Their are numerous examples of extreme government waste, whether it's $16 muffins, to loans given to failing companies for political favors, to unneeded infrastructure (bridges to no where) etc. Also the number of federal employees has risen dramatically since 2008, while more and more private workers became unemployed during this same time. These same federal employees have also gotten generous raises in that same time period. There has got to be room for some serious cutting of this waste. Perhaps bring back the salaries of federal employees back to the 2008 level is part of a solution. An independent panel (those with strong business experience) should be assembled to examine and make recommendations for solutions.
