To more accurately represent the people of their district or state, Representative’s and Senator’s salary should be calculated to match the average per capita income of the district or state they represent. Further, their health benefits should reflect those of their district or state. As an example, if 30% of their district or state does not have health coverage then their government coverage is reduced by 30%. Also, Representative’s and Senator’s retirement benefits should not be any more or less than that of the people they represent, i.e.; Social Security and Medicare.
This system would eliminate the unfair practice of voting on their own pay raises.
Congress cannot understand the financial hardships or successes of the people if they put themselves on a financial pedestal.
