Alimony is old fashioned. Too many divorcees are bound to their former spouses due to court ordered alimony that can sometimes continue until the remarriage or death of the recipient. This encourages dependency and gives no incentive for the receiving spouse to become self-sufficient. It also holds the payers hostage by the courts and the ex spouses.
Rehabilitative alimony is appropriate in some cases, but should end within a reasonable amount of time once the divorce is final. At this point, men and women are paying a large portion of their paychecks to exes on top of court ordered child support. This often leaves the responsible party unable to pay their own bills and results in many return trips to court.
Let's end the cycle of dependency. Put a cap on it!
