The sentence for a rape conviction in the United States is 11 years. Most rapists only serve five or six. A 2002 study by Lisak and Miller found that 63% of rapists are repeat offenders and the majority also engage in other violent acts including battery and the physical and sexual abuse of children. While some states incarcerate "habitual" drug offenders for decades, rapists walk free in a few years to rape again while their victims must deal with the emotional damage for the rest of their lives. This must stop. In many countries around the world (Australia, Chile, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Peru, the United Kingdom and others) life imprisonment is a possible sentence for convicted rapists. We demand the same or a minimum of 30 years served.
