Currently, copyright terms are absurdly long: 70 years postmortem author for personal works and 90 years for corporate works. Furthermore, every time Steamboat Willie approaches this cutoff, the copyright term is extended again. These extensions are stagnating the public domain and harming our cultural and artistic development.
Creative Commons is beginning to make existing copyright law obsolete. Our government should recognize the changing technological climate and adapt to it. 50 years is plenty of time for anyone to profit from a good quality work in this environment.
