To account for massive productivity gains, stagnant/decreasing wages over the past 40 years, and rising income inequality, a federally enforced maximum work week of 30 hours should be enacted while keeping salaries the same and increasing the minimum wage to account for lost hours for hourly workers. All current protections of 40 hour/week jobs would now apply to anyone working 30 hours per week. Since employers refuse to share the gains over the past 40 years with the people who made it possible, then the federal government should enact and enforce this legislation. Some benefits would possibly include less commuting, less expense for child care, better quality of life, and increased productivity. It is time for the promises of technological advances to begin to benefit workers tangibly.
