show support for reducing obesity by compelling insurers to reclassify post-weight loss skin removal surgery.

Created by C.P. on May 16, 2014

Obesity contributes to a wide swath of diseases, and significantly reduces the quality of life for those affected by it, so we encourage weight loss by promoting healthy eating and exercise. Overcoming obesity is more than just losing weight, though; those who do succeed in reaching a healthy weight are frequently still afflicted with significant amounts of now-excess skin. This problem is not merely unsightly and a burden on self-esteem, but as any healthcare professional can confirm, presents its own opportunities for additional disease. Health insurers widely classify surgery to remove such excess skin as elective and cosmetic, putting it out of reach for the vast majority of Americans. We petition that this be reclassified so that Americans can afford this type of operation.
