We need to recognize the refugee status of these children. They were sent on an expensive 12-day dangerous journey to seek aid at our Southern border. What parent would send children on this type of trip if the alternative at home was not truly a life threat. Any slap dash effort to just summarily give them a quick hearing and get them back on planes to deliver them back into that peril is NOT what America is about. We are better than that. We not only have an international obligation to recognize their true situations but to show the compassion and care that we are capable of as a country.
