Shutdown Aging US Nuclear Power Plants Before We Have Fukushima/Chernobyl in the US

Created by E.B. on September 30, 2011

Based on the best available science, the Chernobyl accident killed a million people, and Fukushima will kill another million. US nuclear plants were designed to work safely only 25-40 years. Aging reactors can meltdown and blow up if they lose power for just 4 hours (external and backup power fails). With power outage or intentional attack, each nuclear power plant becomes a deadly threat to the entire population within hundreds of miles. The permanent damage to the US from a series of accidental meltdowns can only be compared to a nuclear war—and the radiation released from a single meltdown would be equivalent to limited nuclear war. We request that all plants operating beyond their original design life be immediately shut down, and all spent fuel placed in on-site dry cask storage.
