The President supports veterans, but he has the ability to do more to support the thousands of unemployed Iraq-Afghan war veterans. With the stroke of a pen, he can sign an executive order mandating that all federal agencies hire qualified, Iraq-Afghan war veteran applicants who have been unemployed for more than 90 days. The current veteran preferences are insufficient. The unemployment rate of Iraq-Afghan war veterans has reached epidemic proportions. 12.7% of Gulf War veterans aged 18-34 are unemployed; women in that group fair even worse with 14.3% unemployed. In total, there are 175,000 unemployed Gulf war veterans in the 18-34 age bracket. Our society has thousands of people who risked their lives and now want to work, but have not been given the opportunity. Let’s change that.
