The government issues, handles, creates, and uses social security numbers and other personal identy information on a daily basis. These bits of information are tied to every American's personal record of information. From bank statements to credit cards, all can be accessed with a simple social security number. In 2012, 3.3 Million unencrypted bank account numbers and 3.8 Million tax returns were stolen by a phishing attack against the South Carolina Department of Revenue. The government needs to create Information Assurance Awarness training for any and all US citizens that handle payroll or other sensitive information. A public website with up to date information on protecting peoples identity's is a low cost user friendly way of mitigating identity theft at the source.
