Over 100 years ago, Queen Liliuokalani was wrongfully deposed and the Hawaiian constitutional monarchy overthrown by U.S. marines and sailors at the request of European and American businessmen, who had formed a Provisional Government to replace the Queen. On Jan. 17, 1893, in fear of her life and her subjects the Queen temporarily yielded her authority to the U.S. with the written expectation the U.S. would undo the actions of the Provisional Government and restore her as the constitutional sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands. Instead Hawaii was wrongfully annexed. On November 23, 1993, President William Clinton issued the Apology Resolution, Public Law 103-150, apologizing and acknowledging the U.S. actions of overthrowing the Queen was wrong and illegal.
