Although the United States signed onto the Rome Statute in 1998, we never ratified the agreement that created the International Criminal Court.
The failure of the U.S. to join the ICC is a grave injustice to the actions of American foreign policy in the 20th century.
During this century, the U.S. helped to form the United Nations; prosecute Nazi's in the Nuremberg Trials and served on tribunals to prosecute individuals from the Rwandan and Yugoslav genocides.
Our failure to join the ICC puts us among countries like Iran, North Korea and Sudan as nations refusing to join a court that would prosecute individuals who commit heinous crimes.
For this reason, we, the people of the United States, ask President Obama to propose to the Senate an agreement that would make us a member of the ICC.
