Persons paying into social security for 7 or more years entitled to a death benefit of $1200. family or authorities can request the $1200 credit in lieu of the cash of present benefit of $255 and use the credit to obtain services from a list of providers. All funeral providers can request to be placed on a published list with medicare.gov as a preferred provider and be paid directly from SS after completion of services with signed family member or authority. This check should be sent to the participating funeral provider who accepts it as PAYMENT IN FULL for the following services: to transport pick up of the body within 20 miles; provide a short and respectful viewing of body of no more than two hours( if requested) after 7 days of death; pays for the cremation and wooden urn.
