While we applaud the president for taking the initiative to introduce more of a role for the private space industry to flourish and take over some responsibilities of NASA, the direction NASA is currently taking in terms of Research and Development is wrong. We have mastered rockets now for decades, to retire the space shuttle and replace it with and aging technology is irresponsible and wasteful of the taxpayer money. Instead redirect NASA to research and develop revolutionary technologies for putting humans into space and deep space such as a space elevator or maglev launch platform (StarTram). These technologies are not pie in the sky ideas and are completely doable with the right presidential leadership.
