While there are many food labeling requirements inside the United States, an increasing amount of artificial ingredients and processing has made it difficult for citizens to recognize when an item contains products taken from animals. With over ten percent of Americans eating a primarily vegetarian diet, and many more seeking to reduce their consumption of animal products, this represents a daily obstacle in finding simple sustenance. All this could be solved by requiring that food companies add whether or not there is meat or animal by-products to pre-existing food labels. This would help to clear up ambiguity, aid millions of Americans on a daily basis, and show a clear commitment from the administration towards animal welfare all without any increased costs to businesses or tax-payers.
