Sponsor a constitutional amendment to replace the Electoral College with direct popular election of the President.

Created by J.R. on January 26, 2013

Article 2 of the Constitution was included for two reasons: 1st, the Federalists in the Constitutional Convention did not trust the electorate to select the Chief Executive; and 2nd, as a practical means of voting in an era when it took weeks to travel a few hundred miles.

Neither reason is applicable here and now. We do not need, and never needed, to select a few wise men to think and vote for us. And today's communications are almost instantaneous.

As constructed, the Electoral College serves to disenfranchise up to 49 percent of the electorate in any given state, and gives disproportionate power to highly populous states. By instituting direct popular vote, each vote will be counted equally.
