Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have been on a hunger strike since February of this year, to protest their indefinite detention. As a response the military ordered the resident doctors and nurses to forceable feed all the protestors to keep them from dying. Force feeding is cruel and humiliating both for the victim and medical staff conducting the procedure. On July 8th, U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler dismissed a Syrian detainee’s request to end the force-feeding, on the grounds that she did not have the jurisdiction to do so. Judge Kessler did name a someone who could. President Obama has the authority as the Commander-in-chief to put an end to the force-feeding. This petition calls for President Obama to give the command to stop the force-feeding of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
